“President Faust would not tell you this himself. Perhaps I can tell it, and he can take it out on me afterward. He had a mortgage on his home drawing 4 percent interest. Many people would have told him he was foolish to pay off that mortgage when it carried so low a rate of interest. But the first opportunity he had to acquire some means, he and his wife determined they would pay off their mortgage. He has been free of debt since that day. That’s why he wears a smile on his face, and that’s why he whistles while he works.”
–President Gordon B. Hinckley, To the Boys and to the Men
We Made It!!!
No more debt (no credit cards, no car loans, no mortgages, nothing, nada, zilch)
Justin and Anna: Are totally free from debt and working on financial independence so that they can spend more time serving both in and out of the church. They were inspired by church leaders and by the book Your Money or Your Life. They are a great example of how to get out of debt and the blessings that come from living debt free. Almost there
(Everything but the house and we’re working to pay that off soon too!)
Matt and Jeanette: Went from heavy student loan and car debt to having everything paid off except for the house in 5 years. Their current goal is to get the house paid off in the next 5 years and be totally debt free. To read about Matt and Jeanette’s experiences with getting out of debt click here.
Sean and Melissa: After ensuring that they had sufficient rainy day funds to weather job loss, Sean and Melissa went full steam into paying off their house. They put 45% of their income toward their house mortgage, postponing retirement savings until after they pay off their house 2 years from now. While this doesn’t follow conventional advice regarding retirement investments, those that feel that paying off a house is the top priority after getting sufficient rainy day funds, will find inspiration from Sean and Melissa’s story. They also have great advice for those feeling overwhelmed in their efforts to become debt free. To read my interview with Sean and Melissa click here.
